3rd Annual Spalding Foundation For Injured Drivers Charity Race To Highlight The
Day's Action This Sunday At Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park.

When you think of traditions, it's easy to come up with examples. There are many to choose
from, some universally accepted such as the Super Bowl, putting up a Christmas Tree. Others
are more personal, such as taking a special family member to their favorite restaurant on their
birthday. Creating a tradition is a bit harder. It takes a little cooperation from others, and it
needs to be a good idea that stands the test of time. The better it stands this test, the stronger
and more widespread that tradition becomes.

    When
Wyalusing Valley Motorsports Park began operating in 2006, one of the first “special
events” track promoter Billy Maynard set out to put together was the concept of putting stock car
and modified racers in the smaller, but very quick racing machines that race at the facility. The
first thing that occurred to Maynard was the importance to use the event for a good cause. He
immediately contacted Spalding Foundation For Injured Drivers Chairperson Betty Sherwood,
who liked the concept. Next, Maynard began talking with the racers to see if they would be
willing to donate use of their machines for the event. While many were understandably reluctant,
some felt the cause was well worth the risk and agreed. Finally, Maynard came up with a format.
An invitation only event, pitting a diverse group of 6 drivers that spanned different divisions,
surfaces, and eras of local and regional motorsports to see who could adapt to the quick 270
microsprints. These cars have a very high weight-to-horsepower ratio, with a minimum weight of
700 and approximately 80 horsepower. There lies the final twist. These methanol burning two
stroke engines, commonly used on dirt bikes, require the driver to shift up to FOUR times per
lap!

In the inaugural event, SST Modified driver and dark horse Gene Beers came from last place
to win over pavement modified, SST modified, and legend car ace Tony Hanbury, who led the
majority of the event. All of the drivers expressed disbelief in how difficult the machines were to
drive. While many in the stock car world look at these machines as overgrown go karts, the
drivers found that in reality they are undergrown sprint cars!

In 2007, the decision was made to use the ultracompetitive Slingshots were used for the event.
Their very strict rules produce very equal machines, great racing, and their much more reliable
engines simply made them a very attractive alternative. When the checkers flew, twin brothers
Butch and Rich Green finished up front. Again, the drivers were surprised by how difficult the
miniature dirt modifieds were to drive. Many requested power steering if they ever drove them
again!

2008's 3rd annual event is now upon us, scheduled for this Sunday, July 27th. This year, the
track is doubling it's donation to the foundation, donating $2 from every grandstand ticket sold
to the charity. Any businesses, individuals, or racers wishing to make a donation to the charity
will be able to do so at the concession stand. For businesses, the donation is tax deductible, so
they are welcome to make their donation via check, which can be used as their receipt. Last
year, nearly $500 was raised for the Foundation. This year's goal is to DOUBLE that amount.

This year, the event will once again include some very talented drivers. In alphabetical order,
they include

2007 Five Mile Point Modified Champion Jim Crawn, who decided to hang up his helmet after
last season following a racing career that produced over 50 career feature wins. Representing
the “youth movement” is Jesse “The Jet” Kent, 2007 Chemung Speedrome 4 Cylinder Junior
Division Champion & Rookie of the Year. Kent's racing roots run deep, as he is the son of multi-
time asphalt modified champion J.R. Kent, and the grandson of modified legend George Kent.
Joining Crawn on the retired list this season is Wayne Lent, who has multiple championships
and many wins to his credit. Lent was also named one of Tioga Motorsports Park's 50 Greatest
Drivers. With nearly 30 years racing experience, Ninevah, NY's Gary Roberts finally captured his
first points title ever last season, winning the Five Mile Point IMCA Modified Championship.
Roberts has many wins under his belt, and has even tackled asphalt racing for a few years.
Dave Rumsey, an icon for many years at the Five Mile Point Speedway, vacated the seat a few
seasons ago, Rumsey has volunteered to saddle up one more time to do battle with a couple
competitors from days gone by, Crawn and Roberts. Last but not least, Pro Truck Series driver
Mike Warren will complete the field. He could very well be the “wild card” in the event, as he has
not competed against any of the other drivers in the past.

Collectively, these drivers have compiled and astounding number of wins and championships.
We are proud to have them with us for this event, and would like to thank them for contributing
their time and talents.

There will be a special page in Race Track Weekly, the track program, dedicated to this event.
There will be opportunities for fans to meet the drivers and get their autographs in the program,
or on their chosen item.

Come on out the the “Nightmare of the Northern Tier” this Sunday, and help support a great
organization!
